MATE ROV Competition
For the MATE competition, students in 5th to 12th grade form teams of three or more students to build an underwater ROV that is used to perform a set of tasks in the deep end of a swimming pool.
Our current thinking is that we could sponsor one or more middle school teams (5th to 8th grade) and possibly a high school team. If your student is already on a team, we could also mentor their team on the weekends.
The program would run from February through May and meet on the weekends. We would offer training on different aspects of building an ROV - buoyancy, propulsion, electronics, safety, mechanical design, report writing, project management and leadership.
You can find out more about the MATE ROV program on their website. https://materovcompetition.org/
My child is interested in the MATE ROV competition.
I am interested in being a mentor for the robotics team.
Describe how you would like to mentor the students.
Other Robotics Activities
In the future, we could also offer other robotics programs including participating in the FIRST LEGO League, combat robotics, drones or field trips to robotics events including the taping of the next season of Battlebots.
My child is interested in other robotics activities.
Makerspace
We are also in the process of creating a Makerspace that would be used for the various classes and programs for the X Academy. Some of the equipment that we are looking at providing in the Makerspace includes: 3D printers, a CNC machine, electronics equipment, embroidering sewing machine, video and audio production equipment, computers, VR headsets, drones and other fun stuff. In the future, the Makerspace may be available for people to work on their own projects.
My child is interested in using the Makerspace.

Math Competitions and Practice Sessions
This year, we want to formalize participation in math competitions and practice sessions. The current plan is to offer a one hour math competition program immediately after the regular Math Circle from 11 to 12 on Saturday mornings. After the Math Circle ends on March 21, the practice sessions will probably be on Saturday mornings at 9am. See this document for more information on the specific math competitions.

My child is interested in the following math competitions:
Bay Area Math Olympiad (BAMO) – Feb. 26
Math Kangaroo – March 19
Purple Comet – online, last week of April
Berkeley Math Tournament – mid-April
Santa Cruz County Math Contest – early May
Math Summer Camp in Santa Cruz County
Every year we get asked if we are sponsoring a summer math camp in Santa Cruz. We are talking with some of our teachers and Cabrillo College about a one week camp through Cabrillo's summer camp program.
